Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disease that affects the brain’s ability to coordinate body movements, including walking, speaking and writing, movement control and balance. The main symptoms are: tremors, muscle stiffness, bradykinesia and postural instability; other symptoms that may occur with the progression of the disease are dysphagia, dysarthria, gastrointestinal motility disorders, gastroparesis, asthenia, depression and cognitive decline. Malnutrition, often underestimated, is due to swallowing problems and dyskinesias (involuntary repetitive movements) which, in addition to increasing the difficulty in eating, can cause, if accentuated, an increase in energy consumption.
